Magnolia Reverie

Exploring

Pale Preppy

I love the visuals in the film The Romantics. The movie (based on the novel by Galt Niederhoffer, which I plan to read tout de suite) follows the story of a group of college friends reunited for a wedding.  The groom has previously been in a relationship with the main character, who is a reluctant bridesmaid.

The look of it is calmly desaturated and the style (excellent) I’m going to call pale preppy.  The photography embraces diffuse light and negative space, mirroring the ambivalence of these 20-somethings.  I love the use of the frame to tell the story by separating and isolating the characters.  The movie is understated almost to the point of spareness, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the emotion of the storyline.
